Minnesota estate sale upcycling ideas

One of our favorite parts of running online estate sales in Minnesota is seeing the unique treasures that pass through each home. From vintage glassware to delicate china teacups, there are so many items that deserve a second life.

Teacups, in particular, often sell for just a few dollars at auction, and sometimes they’re even left behind. Instead of letting them sit unused, we decided to turn a few into something new: beautiful handmade candles.

Here’s how we did it.

What You’ll Need

  • Vintage teacups (estate sale finds are perfect!)

  • Candle wax

  • Candle wicks

  • Wick stickers or glue dots

  • A microwave-safe container

  • Optional: essential oils for scent

Step 1: Secure the Wick

We placed the wick in the center of each teacup using a small adhesive sticker to hold it in place at the bottom. Make sure it’s centered. This helps the candle burn evenly.

Step 2: Melt the Wax

We melted the wax in the microwave using short intervals, stirring between each round until fully liquified.

If you’d like to add scent, this is when you can mix in essential oils.

Step 3: Pour and Let Cool

After microwaving, let the wax cool briefly until the wax is slightly opaque. Carefully pour the melted wax into each teacup, keeping the wick centered. We used a clothespin to keep the wick centered. Then let the candles cool completely. This may take a few hours.

Once cooled, trim the wick, and that is it!

The Finished Result

What started as simple estate sale teacups became charming handmade candles, perfect for a bedside table, gift, or cozy decor piece.

Vintage teacup candle cooled down and ready to display and use.
